Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) is Sri Lanka’s premier organization for the development and promotion of exports, established in 1979 under the Sri Lanka Export Development Act No. 40. EDB functions as;

  • Policy Adviser – Advising the Government on national export development policies to create a conducive environment for exports
  • Monitor – Monitoring the performance and function of the export sector
  • Promoter -Implementing product, design, market, and other development programmes to promote Sri Lanka’s products and services
  • Facilitator – Serving as the focal point of export development, facilitating and co-coordinating export development activities with all stakeholders
  • Knowledge Provider – Providing advisory services and information concerning all aspects of the export business and advisory assistance to the exporters

Today, EDB has reached beyond its original responsibility as a trade promotion organization, and have reached unto multiple layers of the country’s industrial, service and export ecosystem playing the role of a mentor and a facilitator in reaching new markets and identifying market and industry trends. EDB at present is entrusted with additional responsibilities, such as; formulation of National Export Development Plan, facilitating the supply and diversification of products and services, execution of research and market development programmes, helping to resolve the issues exporters face during their interaction with government bodies, development of skills within the Sri Lankan exporter community and improving the international relationship between global and local agencies.

The main goal of EDB is to provide assistance and create opportunities for Sri Lankan exporters and industries to expand their business internationally, thereby increasing export sales and employment prospects. To meet this objective, we offer consultative services to small- and mid-sized businesses located throughout Sri Lanka and sponsor educational seminars and training programs designed for exporters and potential exporters in the region.

Our knowledge of the Sri Lankan marketplace and the distribution characteristics of its many industries help Sri Lankan exporters and suppliers to increase their exports to the global market.

EDB believes that trade promotion to be an integral part of export development. Exporters &  potential exporters and other stakeholders at large benefit from concerted, coordinated, and well-designed promotional campaigns to propel Sri Lankan products to regional and international markets.

EDB works together with multiple public, private, diplomatic, and global partners to promote Sri Lanka’s trade through conventional and digital channels.

Conventional methods of trade showcasing include the organization and participation at trade events and exhibitions globally and organizing periodical globally synchronized events in all trade missions overseas to promote Brand Sri Lanka, its exports, and investment opportunities, targeting specific Industry sectors. SLEDB also promotes Sri Lankan industries and services online through digital marketing and advertising.
