Sculpture in Sri Lanka

Sculpture in Sri Lanka has evolved in parallel with the art of painting and has undergone various changes from prehistoric times to the 20th century.

With the advent of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and the development of the Buddhist civilization, the arts and crafts also developed in association with the Buddhist culture.

Stone Buddha statues were erected during the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa eras. Later brass, bronze, wood and brick were used. During the Polonnaruwa period, Hindu bronze statues were common. Different cultures and traditions have changed from the Anuradhapura era to different eras and evolved into the modern era.

Sri Lankan sculptors are currently creating a variety of research and modern traditions.
